A new book: Crisis Era European Integration: Economic, Political and Social Lessons from Croatia

The book ‟Crisis Era European Integration: Economic, Political and Social Lessons from Croatiaˮ has been published. Edited by Jakša Puljiz and Hrvoje Butković, this book was published by the renowned international publisher Routledge from London. It analyzes the impact of Croatia’s EU membership in two main areas: political and economic, with individual chapters dealing with the relevant topics of post-accession development.

The chapters in this book start from the premise that Croatia’s membership in the EU is of particular importance for the European integration process, given that the last decade was probably the most challenging for this process so far. It started with the debt crisis in the Eurozone and ended with the economic difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Such demanding circumstances, in which the work program of the European Union and its member states was often defined in an ad hoc manner, represented a major test for Croatia’s governance abilities. The book offers answers to the question of how successful Croatian policy makers were in facing the challenges caused by the crisis and other necessary adjustments. It investigates how EU membership has influenced the design and implementation of selected national policies, the functioning of governing institutions and patterns of cooperation between social actors.

This book was created as a result of work on the scientific project ‟The Impact of European Policies on Socio-Economic Development and Public Policies in Croatia – EUROIMPACTˮ carried out by the Department for European Policies at IRMO. The project was financed within the Framework Agreement concluded between the IRMO and the Ministry of Science and Education of Croatia, with the funds of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan 2021-2026. The book is intended for researchers and students of Europeanization, as well as policy makers, entrepreneurs and lobbyists who deal with the European integration issues.
